A casino floor manager who allegedly stole two HK$50,000 gaming chips was arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) at his workplace in Taipa on Monday night.

The 23-year-old local resident, surnamed Chu, was reported to the PJ by the casino about the suspected theft while he was on patrol on the casino floors, police spokesperson Choi Iat Peng said.

Police then looked at the surveillance camera and found the suspect snatched two gaming chips with a value of HK$50,000 each from a baccarat table when it was out of sight of the croupier.

The table was not empty but occupied by some players at that time, Mr Choi said.

The floor manager was taken in by the PJ when off duty at about 11:00pm together with the croupier for interrogation.

However, the two gaming chips could not yet be retrieved and the 23-year-old denied the alleged crime.

Mr Choi added that the croupier did not involve in the alleged theft.

The suspect had been working in the casino industry for a few years, and was hired by this casino as a floor manager since its opening about half a year ago.

Police are still investigating whether the man had committed other casino thefts in the past, Mr Choi said.
The suspect was sent to the Public Prosecutions Office and will be charged with aggravated theft.
