Following today’s state Supreme Court ruling that upheld the constitutionality of the state’s Indian gaming compacts, the Forest County Potawatomi announced it intends to move forward with a $240 million expansion of its Milwaukee casino, but cautioned that plans could be scaled back if a Kenosha casino is approved.

At a Milwaukee press conference, Forest County Potawatomi Attorney General Jeff Crawford praised the decision, calling it “a victory for 35,000 family-supporting jobs and the Wisconsin taxpayers.”

Crawford said the expansion will lead to an additional 1,000 permanent jobs and 500 temporary construction jobs, and lead to increased payments by the Potawatomi to the state and the city and county of Milwaukee. Crawford said the construction is planned to begin within the next 30 to 60 days and will take approximately two years to complete.

Crawford warned however, if what he described as an "$808 million gorilla" of a casino were approved in Kenosha, the expansion may be scaled back during construction. The Menominee tribe is exploring using the Dairyland Greyhound Park facility as the site for its off-reservation casino.

“The Kenosha casino would dwarf what we are talking about here,” Crawford said.

Crawford placed the potential impact of a Kenosha casino to the Potawatomi bottom line by $80 million yearly and said it could result in reduced payments to the city and state. “We are paying a premium to the state of Wisconsin for the right to be in the Milwaukee area,” Crawford said, adding that if the tribe loses business to a casino in Kenosha, that they reserve the right to reduce their payments to the state.

The expansion is planned to add 500,000 square feet to the casino floor, nearly double the number of slot machines to about 3,100, double or triple the number of gaming tables, expand the current poker room and add three new restaurants. The plans also calls for the construction of an additional six-story parking garage and a bridge to the casino off of the 16th Street viaduct.
