Prescott Home To Contend For Title
by: Brad Meadows
September 8, 2007 --

Over the past few years, Rodney Prescott has hundreds of wins while also logging thousands of miles traveling to tracks across the country. For the next few months, however, Prescott will be focused exclusively on the 2007 leading jockey title at Hoosier Park in his home state of Indiana.

“I’m hoping for continued success here,” said Prescott. “I stayed at River Downs so I’m a little behind but hopefully I can catch up quickly. I’m just going to be at Hoosier Park this meet.”

Prescott, who finished second in the country among all North American jockeys in wins in 2005, relishes the opportunity to focus on one track for the next three months. The Hoosier Park soil is a familiar one to the Indiana-native, who captured the leading jockey title in 2006.

In addition to a leading rider title at Hoosier Park, Prescott has been among the most consistent jockeys in recent memory at Indiana’s first pari-mutuel track. In the last four years, he has finished no worse than third place in the leading jockey standings. His 301 wins since 2003 are the most by any jockey.

“I have been traveling quite a bit over the last few years,” added Prescott. “I’m actually going to take two days off a week when we’re not racing. With more jockeys here this year, I expect it to be very competitive.”

Prescott has had success in Ohio and Kentucky but his home state of Indiana remains his most profitable. He has twice won the leading rider title at Indiana Downs. Entering the 2007 season, Prescott had 435 career wins at Hoosier Park, trailing only all-time leading jockey Terry Thompson.

In October of last year, Prescott earned his 2,000th career win at Hoosier Park. A true gentleman of the sport, he was honored with the Rodney Dickens Award at River Downs in 1994. The award is presented annually to the jockey who shows outstanding sportsmanship and ability during his first season.
