Gambling news from http://www.stuff.co.nz/

Gambling losses in Palmerston North average $60,000 a day.

The figures imply gambling is a problem in the city, Best Care Whakapai Hauora Charitable Trust spokesman Jack Rifle said.

"It's out there, a sleeping giant," the problem gambling health promoter said.

- It's elusive because problem gamblers are good at covering their tracks, he said.

Mr Rifle spoke at the Palmerston North City council's Community Well-being Committee this week to try to raise awareness of problem gambling in the city.

Yesterday he told the Manawatu Standard the issue has the potential to get worse.

He said people think the pokies and Lotto are harmless fun - if that couple in Auckland won $18 million, why not me?

But it is easy to get addicted. – Many things can mesmerise people, including the sound of coins dropping, Mr Rifle said.

"Problem gamblers may have their last $20 and decide they feel lucky, but they could have used it for bills or for food."

And many problem gamblers are resourceful when it comes to getting money, he said.

"They may commit a crime, sell the toaster or TV, or hock their wedding ring."

Housie is a big drawcard for Maori, Mr Rifle said.

"There are more cars outside there on Thursday night through to Saturday night than outside the pubs."
