DOWNSTAIRS at the Hotel Warrnambool, deep beneath the crowded bar and dining room, the city's latest craze is under way amid the sound of clinking tumblers, chatter and cruisy music.
It's an activity that requires a sharp mind, the ability to bluff and, above all, chance.
Each Wednesday and Friday night up to 70 people have been huddling around nine poker tables in the Ozone Room, stacking their chips and eyeing their cards.
The National Poker League's south-west Victoria territory operator, Mick Royal, said the free tournaments were run in 72 Victorian pubs and proving very popular.
Tournaments run for 10 weeks and the winners go to a state final where they
are eligible for a trip for two to Las Vegas to play for a $13 million prize pool in the World Series of Poker.
``Our motto is fun, fast and fair,'' Mr Royal said. ``Whether you're an 18-year-old female or an 85-year-old man, it doesn't matter if you've never played, we make it so nobody is intimidated.''
Mr Royal said tournaments were also played at the Union Club Hotel in Colac on Sunday nights and at the Simpson Hotel on Monday nights.
Registration for Warrnambool tournaments is at 6.30pm and cards are dealt at 7.30pm.
