THE mammoth bets just keep rolling in at Betchoice.com, with a cashed-up punter having mixed results.

Betchoice.com's Mark Morrissey reported a flurry of activity in the past week, starting with a winning bet of $115,000 at $1.85 on the New York Mets to beat the St Louis Cardinals last Friday.

Last Saturday, the same punter placed bets of $60,000 on Newcastle (-6.5) at $1.93 against Penrith (winner), $30,000 on St George Illawarra (-13.5) at $1.93 against Cronulla (winner), $70,000 on Souths (-2.5) at $1.96 against North Queensland (loser), $75,000 at $2.36 on San Diego Padres in baseball to beat the Colorado Rockies (loser), and a basketball bet of $100,000 on Turkey at $1.83 to beat Slovenia (winner).

"He is a punting machine," said Morrissey. "He had a couple of bets on the AFL last Sunday and lost both ($125,000), and on Monday and Tuesday outlaid a total of $368,000 on the USA to win the basketball world championship.

"In addition to that, he had $100,000 on Argentina to beat Turkey in the basketball at $1.16, which won, and then $229,000 on Greece to beat France at $1.19 - and that won as well."

ABANDONED SWANS: The Sydney Swans face an uphill battle to make the top four in the AFL, even if they win against Carlton. Should the Swans win, as expected, they need Melbourne to lose against Adelaide to squeeze into the top four and have a guaranteed second chance.

But punters think that won't be happening. "The best backed side all week in the AFL has been Melbourne, who have gone from being $2.40 at the start of the week to $1.70 favourites," said TAB Sportsbet's Glenn Munsie. "Adelaide have drifted from $1.55 to $2.07." Munsie said Melbourne had been well backed to win the flag with bets of $6000 at $14, $2300 at $16, and a $5000 wager on a Melbourne-West Coast grand final quinella at odds of $20.

Hamish Davidson of Davidson Sports Betting said Melbourne were popular with him, while Sportsbook.com.au spokesman Col Greer had a similar tale to tell. "We had a punter have $6000 on Melbourne to beat Adelaide at $1.85 and there was another bet of $5000 at $1.80," said Greer.

In other premiership betting with TAB Sportsbet, Munsie said a punter had $5000 on St Kilda at $10 while Fremantle, who were at $151 six weeks ago, are now into $3.65 and second favourites behind West Coast.

In Brownlow Medal betting, Adam Goodes is now a $2.85 favourite after being at $151 early in the season.

FOUR PLAY: A Sportsbook.com.au client invested $33,000 on an NRL all-up on Thursday at a dividend of $3.30. "To win the bet, the punter needs Melbourne, St George Illawarra, Brisbane and the Bulldogs to win their games," said Greer.

Other bets of note with Sportsbook.com.au were $10,000 on the Brisbane Broncos at $5 to win the grand final and $10,000 on North Queensland to win against Parramatta on Friday night at $2.10.

Davidson Sports Betting attracted plenty of money for Canberra to beat Cronulla, but Davidson said: "I'm happy to take the punters on there as I don't like Canberra without Jason Smith."

Munsie said the Broncos were the "dramatic firmers" in TAB Sportsbet's grand final winner market after holding their opposition scoreless for the past two weeks, while Parramatta have eased after missing the chance for a top-four berth with last week's loss to Brisbane.
