Rattlesnake leaving Spotlight 29 Casino for Classic Club

Renowned chef-owner Jimmy Schmidt's casual elegant Rattlesnake restaurant will relocate this fall to the new Classic Club clubhouse, centerpiece for the Arnold Palmer-designed Classic Club Course in Palm Desert.
The Rattlesnake's five-year lease ends Sept. 22 at the Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella, and a day later the restaurant expects to open in the new 63,000-square-foot Tuscan-style clubhouse, said Esrick Lewis, general manager of the restaurant.

Schmidt's Rattlesnake, which features a high-end seasonal menu with prime certified angus beef, free-range poultry and premium seafood, last summer earned the Diamond 5-Star Dining Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences.

A new steakhouse to be called Gem is slated to replace the Rattlesnake at Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella, said Paul Speirs, a spokesman for the casino, which is a business venture of the Twentynine Palms Band of Mission Indians.

Additional details about Gem weren't available yet, Spiers said.

The tribe in March broke ground on a $100 million hotel called The California Palm as an expansion of the Spotlight 29 Casino.

Lewis said Rattlesnake perceived the Classic Club as a good opportunity and took it.

Schmidt, who trained as a chef in France, will operate all food, beverage and catering activities at the Classic Club, the host course of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic golf tournament.

Rattlesnake has catered international events, from the Le Mans car race to the North American International Automobile Show in Detroit.

For four years Rattlesnake has been a sponsor for the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic golf tournament's amateur awards party. Schmidt plans to host the annual tee-off dinner, the first event of the annual golf tournament to be held Jan. 14-20, 2008.
Diners at the new Rattlesnake location will have views of an 18-hole public golf course on 246 acres on the north side of I-10.

The Classic Club was built by the valley's H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation, then donated to the Hope Classic's parent organization as a way to benefit the foundation's charitable giving throughout the valley.

Construction on the golf course began in 2004 and was completed in time for the Hope Classic event. The clubhouse is still being built.
