A Saturday night phone call from jockey Edgar Prado to trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. led to Sunday success in the $110,900 Poker Handicap (G3) at Belmont Park.

Rebel Rebel (Ire) had been winless in four starts since a victory in a one-mile allowance race at the Elmont, New York, track in October—a race in which Prado rode the bay colt to a two-length victory.

"Prado called me last night and told me he wanted to take this horse off the pace," Dutrow said following Rebel Rebel's 2 ¼-length victory on Sunday. "He usually lies close, but I told him to go on ahead and do it. I thought it was a great idea.

"He really likes this course. The only two times he's won in this country have been [at Belmont Park]."

The four-year-old Revoque (Ire) colt came to the United States last summer after finishing second in the Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) at Newmarket and fourth in the Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) at the Curragh.

In his first North American start, he finished third in the Virginia Derby (G1) for trainer Bobby Frankel. Subsequently joining Dutrow's barn, he won an allowance/optional claiming event over the Belmont Park turf for his new trainer.

"He's just getting a little bit better," Dutrow explained. "There was never anything wrong with him, we were just trying to pick the right spots."

Settling in sixth through three-quarters of a mile, Rebel Rebel responded when roused by Prado to take a head lead in early stretch and drive unchallenged to the line, covering one mile in 1:33.34 on firm turf.

Remarkable News (Ven), winner of the Connaught Cup (Can-G3) at Woodbine in his previous start on May 28, rallied to take second, 2 ¼ lengths in front of Grade 3 winner Vicarage.

Owned by IEAH Stables and Resolute Group Stables, Rebel Rebel has won five of 18 starts and earned $407,852. He is the first stakes winner out of the Ile de Bourbon mare French Quarter (Ire).
