The New Mexico Lottery has posted record sales for the 2005-2006 fiscal year, which ended June 30.
Preliminary figures show gross sales exceeding $154.6 million, an increase of $15.4 million over the previous year. The profits from the lottery that will be available to finance Lottery Success Scholarships total $36.9 million, an increase of $4.6 million from last year. This is the fourth consecutive year in which profits have exceeded $30 million.
New Mexico Lottery CEO Tom Romero says two record Powerball jackpots exceeding $300 million boosted player traffic, helping fuel the increases.
Since its creation in 1996, the lottery has generated $286 million, $66.5 million of it transferred to the state's Public School Capital Outlay Fund, and the remainder used to pay for Lottery Success Scholarships for nearly 38,000 students.
