Resident one tough winner

By GARY WEST
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

GRAND PRAIRIE -- The race, you've probably heard, doesn't always go to the swift. OK, but it always goes to the swift if he's tough. And among the 2-year-olds at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, none is tougher than Be A Resident.

Saturday, he won the $125,000 Staunch Avenger division of the Texas Stallion Stakes in what is becoming typical fashion for him. Sheer speed generally determines the outcome of races for juveniles, and -- yes -- Be A Resident is fast. But his greatest asset has been his determination. In all three of his races, he has momentarily lost the lead. But in all three he has responded to win.

Austin Lights dueled with him from the outside Saturday, and then Holy Mission challenged him from the inside, momentarily putting a nose in front. But at the wire, Be A Resident drove clear to win by more than a length, completing the 5 1/2 furlongs in stakes-record time, 1 minute, 3.92 seconds. Holy Mission finished second, with Mary's Gray Boy 1 1/2 lengths back in third.

"This horse has tremendous heart and determination," said trainer Bret Calhoun about Be A Resident, who's owned by Wayne Saunders and Larry Hirsch of Dallas. "He's a lot of fun to train and has a lot of talent, plus a lot of heart to go along with it."

Be A Resident won his debut in May after dueling on the lead and momentarily losing it. And then, in the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity, he dueled with the stakes-winning Datrick for about three furlongs, losing his advantage in the stretch but recovering to win by a nose.

After that race, Calhoun said, Be A Resident became more confident and self-assured.

And so Saturday, when challengers ran at him from all sides, Be A Resident simply went about his business, explained winning jockey Cliff Berry. Be A Resident even waited on horses, Berry said, as if inviting a challenge.

With his third win in as many starts, Be A Resident, who was purchased for $10,000 as a yearling, earned $75,000 and increased his bankroll to $145,584.
