Live rose to chart success on the strength of its anthemic music and idealistic, overtly spiritual songwriting, two hallmarks which earned the group frequent comparisons to U2. Their 1991 debut album, Mental Jewelry, made Live one of the key players in the post-Nirvana alternative music scene due to singles such as "Operation Spirit (The Tyranny of Tradition)" and "Pain Lies on the Riverside." Three years later in 1994, Live returned with the breakout follow-up Throwing Copper which reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200 fifty-two weeks after its initial release, the first time in the history of the Billboard LP Chart and sold more than 12 million copies worldwide thanks to a trio of #1 singles: “Selling the Drama,” “I Alone” and “Lightning Crashes.” Their third LP, Secret Samadhi, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and featured the #1 single “Lakini’s Juice."
