Riverboat Casino to Open Soon in St. Mary Parish
May 8, 2007 06:11 PM EDT
It's bringing millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs to Acadiana, but before St. Mary Parish feels a pay off they have to place a bet of their own.
The billboards are up and soon people in Amelia will have their first riverboat casino.
About 400 jobs will come with the opening of the Amelia Belle. The riverboat casino is expected to open near the end of May. When it does, parish government will be ready to reap the financial benefits.
Even though the money isn't in hand at the moment, parish government is starting the bond process as a way to spend revenue just after the casino opens.
The bonding process doubles the 1.5 million the parish gets upfront from the casino. That creates three million dollars the parish will spend on building expansions, security, parks & recreation and roads.
The first improvement is a bypass leading to Amelia. That's a path a lot people in the town hope casino customers will soon be traveling in droves.
If everything goes as planned the riverboat should be open for the afternoon of May 16th. |
