RIVERSIDE, IA - Work on a new casino resort here is 95 percent complete and will be done in time for the grand opening Aug. 31, a casino official said today.
"We have a lot going on here, but we are going to meet our opening schedule,'' said Joe Massa, general manager of Riverside Casino and Golf Resort, located about 15 miles south of Iowa City.
After about a year of construction, the casino will open to the general public at 9 p.m. Aug. 31 after a private party to be held earlier in the day for the about 700 investors and others involved in the casino's development.
Massa said comedian Tom Arnold, an Iowa native, will perform opening night and Jay Leno will appear two weeks later.
Commercials begin airing today in Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities and Des Moines, with print advertising starting this weekend. Massa said it's expected that 75 percent of the casino's business will be from people within an hour's drive.
Before the opening, some final touches are necessary. The gaming floor, however, is almost complete, with the nearly 1,200 slot machines ready for customers. There will also be 24 table games and a 14-table poker room. The resort also includes a 200-room hotel, several restaurants, a spa, an events center and, opening next summer, an 18-hole golf course.
Orientation for some of the casino's 850 employees began today.
