Rod Stewart ordered to pay casino £1.7m
07/03/06

A judge has ordered Rod Stewart to pay a Las Vegas casino more than $3 million (£1.7 million) for not returning money he was paid before he cancelled a concert in 2000.

US District Judge Larry Hicks ruled that the singer's lawyers must pay an additional $153,483 (£87,700) in contempt-of-court sanctions and legal costs for failing to turn over information to lawyers for casino company Harrah's Entertainment before trial last year. Stewart's lawyer, Louis "Skip" Miller, said the singer intended to appeal against the verdict and jury award.

Harrah's lawyer, Kristina Pickering, called the civil breach-of-contract judgment "the right result".

The casino company will ask the court to order Stewart to reimburse it for additional attorney fees and court costs, Miss Pickering said.
