Full-time Midlands Technical College students who get tuition assistance funded by the state’s lottery will see their benefits grow by $60 in the fall.
The tuition benefit is now worth $996 per semester. That means the out-of-pocket tuition costs for students receiving the aid will be $554 — roughly the same as last year.
Part-time students will pay $42 per credit hour; lottery funds will provide the additional $83 per credit hour.
“The part-time option really opens up the door to a college education to a lot of people,” said Midlands Tech spokesman Todd Gavin. “We know there are many working adults out there that are finding they need new skills or a college certificate or degree to advance in their career.”
The General Assembly allocated $47.6 million in lottery profits for tuition assistance for South Carolina residents at the state’s 16 two-year technical colleges.
The State Board of Technical and Comprehensive Education sets the value of tuition assistance for students at two-year schools.
Midlands Tech offers more than 400 evening courses popular with part-time students.
“Lottery tuition assistance makes pursuing a college degree even more affordable, especially for working adults,” Gavin said.
For students who must pay full price, Midlands Tech tuition for the 2006-2007 academic year will be $1,550. That’s a $48 increase over last year, according to the state’s Commission on Higher Education.
