SHADOW’S BEST BUDDY SCORES

There was a time--and it wasn’t that long ago--when a sub-two minute mile was a rarity at Monticello Raceway; and at many other half-mile tracks for that matter.

Before the mid- 1970’s less than a dozen horses had been victorious in 2:00 or better at the Mighty M, which at that time that clocking was considered a standard of excellence.

Now 2:00 miles are commonplace on the double ovals and Monticello Raceway is no exception. Take yesterday’s (July 18) race card for instance.

Not only did everyone of the 13 races go faster than two minutes but the slowest mile on the card was turned in by Mr Bill Hanover (Mark Beckwith) when the pacer won a $12,500 claiming event in 1:57.2. Incredibly, especially for the Mighty M, five (5) races were timed in 1:55 or better, an almost unheard of thing prior to the installation of the video gaming terminals that help increase the purses which then attract better racing stock.

The 1:55 or better winners included: Brokaw (1:55); Skeeter Todd (1:54.4) ;Key Decision (1:54.3); Shadow’s Best Buddy (1:53.2); and JK Royal Flush (1:53.1)

Shadow’s Best Buddy, one of the top horses on the grounds won his eight race of the season which pushed his local purse earnings to over $80,000. The 7-Year-Old Keystone Raider gelding, driven by Larry Stalbaum won the $15,000 Preferred Pace over a fast closing Driven To Win (George Brennan) in a time of 1:53.4. Owned and trained by Kim Asher it marked Shadow’s Best Buddy’s third Preferred Pace win in his last five starts.

However, the fastest race on the July 19 card was turned in by Adam Victor and Son Stable’s, JK Royal Flush, when Jimmy Panteleano guided the Cam’s Card Shark 5-Year-Old stallion to a wire to wire 1:53.1 victory over Flight Sign (Stephane Bouchard) in a $12,500 winners over pace.

Pantaleano also won had a $10,000 winners over pace when, earlier on the car, he drove Brokaw to a 1:55 victory over Step Back who was handled by Jimmy Marohn. The winner is also owned by the Adam Victor & Son Stable.

Marohn got in the daily 1:55 or better-club when he reined Robert Magnani’s, Key Decision, to a 1:54.3 victory in a $20,000 claiming pace over Emmzed N, who was driven by Stephane Bouchard.

And Ray Schnittker joined his fellow reinsmen with a 1:54.4 triumph behind Skeeter Todd in a $12,500 Winners Over pace. The pacer, owned by D’Elegance Stable IX, Mathias Meinzinger and Jerry Silva, turned back Molsam I Am (Eric Abbatiello).

In all, the super 13 - race card on July 18 established a new track record of $122,700 in overnight purses.
