THE Salvation Army has endorsed an initiative to encourage responsible gambling, saying a partnership approach is crucial to eliminating problem gamblers.

The Salvation Army, the Victorian Government, gaming operators and other stakeholders today joined forces to launch the inaugural Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.
The campaign, based on the theme Gamble Responsibly – Stay in Control, urges Victorians to keep their gambling habits in check.

Salvation Army spokesman Major Brad Halse said a collective approach, combining the key stakeholders, would maximise the campaign's impact.

"Whilst The Salvation Army is best known for its strong voice on behalf of those who suffer the consequences of problem gambling, the particular focus of this week is to encourage responsible gambling by those who choose to gamble," he said.

"It is not diluting our previously stated positions. It is recognising that for those who wish to engage in gambling as a social or recreational activity they need to stay in control.

At the same time, this is not purely a matter for the individual; it requires the active support of the industry stakeholders and the Government."

Launched by Gaming Minister John Pandazopoulos today, Responsible Gambling Awareness Week runs until June 25.

The initiative will include a $2 million advertising campaign.
