Scam experts say you should never pay money to get money. But the fact is, folks fall victim to these schemes all too often. The latest scam claims to be something called, the "British Random Lotto".

Here's how it works, a letter and check are sent in the mail saying the recipient should deposit the check and send a processing fee for receiving the prize, a million British pounds in this case. The problem is, there is no such thing as the British Random Lotto.

Here are some tips from Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell. Ignore all mail and phone solicitations for foreign lottery promotions. Even if they are really a lottery from a foreign country because they violate federal law.

Don't fall for the scam of paying money to get your winnings. In the Virginia Lottery, for example, the only money you have to pay to get money is the price of the ticket, plus the cost of a stamp if you mail in losing tickets for a second chance drawing.

Keep your credit card and bank account numbers to yourself. Scam artists often ask for them during an unsolicited sales pitch.
