The growth of the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel has again made its mark at a busy Niagara Falls corner.

Crews are finishing the demolition of a former Ramada Inn at the corner of Rainbow Boulevard and Fourth Street, a hotel that stood in the shadow of the casino.

Once the site is cleared, the property will be used for a surface parking lot to help ease a parking crunch near the popular Cataract City casino.

"We have a tremendous need for additional parking, especially on weekends," said Rajat Shah, Seneca Gaming Corp. general counsel.

The casino attracts approximately 6 million patrons on an annual basis. It is second only to the city's famed waterfalls as a tourist attraction.

Seneca Gaming Corp., the gaming arm of Seneca Nation of Indians, acquired the hotel as part of a 2002 compact it negotiated with New York state that allocated 50 acres of land in the heart of Niagara Falls to the Indian nation.

The 100-room hotel remained in operation until last December when Seneca Gaming officially purchased the land as part of its compact.

The property will gave the casino an additional 150 surface parking spaces, something that is short supply during weekends and other peak periods, Shah said.

"It fills an immediate need," he said.

Crews began demolishing the two-story hotel, which was constructed in the early 1970s, in mid-July. The site is expected to be cleared by the first week in August.

It should be repaved and ready for parkers by early September.

The hotel was one of two Ramada franchises in the heart of Niagara Falls' tourist district. A second Ramada, also on Rainbow Boulevard, was built in 1986 but converted to a Quality Inn Hotel & Suites brand name three years ago.
