The Angelina County Sheriff's Department is warning anyone receiving a check in the mail for winning a British random lottery should beware. There is currently a fraud scam going on, according to local law enforcement authorities.
So far, two people locally have reported getting these checks for $2,560.75 along with a letter explaining that they had won a random British lottery.
According to the letter, they had actually won $85,500, but in order to receive this money they had to pay $2,400 for "international clearance fees." The $2,560.75 check is supposed to help pay for those fees. However, according to Angelina County Sheriff Kent Henson, these checks are actually bogus and no money will be given for them.
In large letters on the top of the letter that is mailed out is written: British Random Lotto, British International Random Lotto, Certificate of Award.
The letter is signed by a Patrick Wesley Jr. and claims that he is the prize coordinator.
The FBI is working with the sheriff's department on finding out who is behind the fraud.
Henson advises anyone receiving one of these checks to not try to cash it, but to call the Sheriff at 634-3331 or the police department at 633-0536.
