The opening of Riverside Casino & Golf Resort last night caused heavy traffic in the area but no major problems, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.
Thousands of people went to the casino on its opening day. It is located about 15 miles south of Iowa City on Highway 22.
Traffic at times came close to backing up onto Highway 218 from its southbound exit, Chief Deputy Darren Dennler said.
On Highway 22, vehicles waiting to turn into the casino parking lot occasionally filled the left turn lane and briefly blocked eastbound traffic, he said. The Iowa Department of Transportation said it would change the settings on the light at the intersection, Dennler said.
The sheriff's department and Iowa State Patrol are placing extra officers in the area this weekend, he said.
There was one arrest last night for public intoxication in the casino's parking lot, Dennler said. Paramedics responded to a medical call in the casino this morning.
