Shops and casino blazesTristan Swanwick and Michael Wray
March 30, 2007 12:00am

AT LEAST four small businesses are picking up the pieces today after a fire swept through the Market Square shopping centre in Sunnybank last night.

The fire started in the air-conditioning of the Yuen's Market and spread through the roofs of the adjoining shops.

The Marigold Seafood Restaurant was completely destroyed by the blaze, and three other shops suffered extensive damage.

A crew of 40 firefighters took four hours to bring the fire under control.

There were no injuries or fatalities, but residents of a neighbouring street were evacuated with heavy smoke posing a serious health risk.

Police completely closed down a large section of busy Mains Rd causing chaos among peak hour commuters.

A senior firefighter last night said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Meanwhile, almost 200 high rollers were evacuated after the roof of Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast caught fire last night.

Witnesses saw flames leaping from the tiered glass roof about 6pm.

"It started off little and got bigger and bigger," said Surfers Paradise resident Rebecca Scott.

June Hesford and her daughter Kristy were among those evacuated.

"Big flames were leaping out of the roof. People were running around telling us to get out. But there wasn't any real panic. Some people were still sitting there playing machines."

Gold Coast Duty District Officer Senior Sergeant Greg Brake said no one was injured however there was moderate structural damage to the roof.

Almost 30 firemen were needed to extinguish the flames.

They had to scale the angled roof to reach the flames.

Mark Gribble, Surfers Paradise Station Officer, said the fire could have been much worse.

"Some rapid intervention shut off what could have been quite a difficult and serious fire. If that had've spread inside we'd really have our hands full."

The Jupiters stage show was cancelled but the casino remained open last night.
