Showing Up Wins Richest Horse Race In Virginia History
Showing Up made a dazzling debut on grass last night, winning the one (m) million dollar Colonial Turf Cup by three-and-one-quarter lengths over Kip Deville at Colonial Downs.
Showing Up shattered the 8-year-old track record, covering the one-and-three-sixteenths miles in less than one minute and fifty-three seconds.
The horse suffered its first loss when it ran sixth in the Kentucky Derby. It was Showing Up's first race since the Derby on May 6th. The race was the opening leg of the five (m) million dollar Grand Slam of Grass, which will continue with the one (m) million dollar Virginia Derby on July 15th at Colonial Downs.
Showing Up has now earned 840-thousand-500 dollars for owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson, who also own Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. The Slam also includes the 400-thousand dollar Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park on August 12th and the two (m) million dollar John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs on November 4th.
