Sir Rabbit Precedes Easter With Thursday Win at FG
NEW ORLEANS, La. (March 20, 2008) --
David Bunn’s Sir Rabbit, easily a hunch play in advance of Easter weekend, outgamed favored Grapelli by a neck in the $40,000 allowance feature on the turf Thursday at Fair Grounds.
Always well-placed with a ground-saving trip under jockey Jesse Campbell, Sir Rabbit withstood the late surge of Grapelli, who broke from the outside post in the field of 12.
The winner, trained by Al Stall Jr., increased his career earnings to $113,123 with his sixth victory in 25 lifetime starts and toured the about 1 1/16-mile distance over the firm Stall-Wilson turf course in 1:45.
Smart Sherif, who made the pace with early splits of :23.14 and :48.77, saved third position at the wire, a length behind Grapelli.
Sir Rabbit paid $13.40, $6.80 and $4, while Grapelli returned $5 and $3.40 and Smart Sherif paid $4.40.
Trainer Steve Asmussen, who will claim his seventh Fair Grounds training title this weekend, added to his impressive numbers with three more wins Thursday, improving his meet total to 85.
Racing resumes Friday of Fair Grounds season-ending weekend with an 11-race program featuring three stakes events. First post time Friday is 12:35 p.m.
