Pennsylvania made history Monday as the first slot machines in the state arrived in our area. Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs accepted delivery of 126 slot machines. The track in Luzerne County is one of five race tracks in Pennsylvania that just received gaming licenses for slot machines.
The grand opening of the casino is set for November 14. That's when people can actually start to play the first 1,1000 slot machines. It has plenty of folks cheering, especially those who now work for Mohegan Sun.
For Lynn Segars, a worker at Mohegan Sun, Columbus Day was a holiday to celebrate. "It's a wonderful break and relief off my shoulders to know that we're kind of going and moving in the right direction. There was that kind of scary time there where we weren't sure what was going to happen," Segars said.
Back in January, Segars moved her family from Louisiana to Luzerne County for a job at Mohegan Sun.
With the casino near Wilkes-Barre slated to open in a few weeks and the slots in place, she said she feels like she will be with the company for a long time.
"We moved a very far way just because we really believe in this company and knowing the security with Mohegan Sun," Segars added.
The casino is just phase one of a two-phase project. The second phase is a gaming facility built next to current location, complete with an additional 2,000 slots, a nightclub, restaurants, a food court, buffet, retail shops, a nightclub and some other nightlife amenities.
For phase one more than 400 people have been hired at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. For phase two casino officials said more than 600 people could be hired.
"I think job creation is probably one of the more important elements of projects such as these and hopefully we'll increase the labor force and provide incentive for people to stay here," said Mohegan Sun President Robert Soper.
Linda Zablotney of Kingston said with the slots in place and the grand opening date set, she's excited for herself and everyone else who may land a job at the Downs. "We've been waiting for this for a long time coming and it's just wonderful to see all of this happening. It's just a great opportunity for all of us," she said.
Construction for phase two is expected to begin next year.
