Gin Blossoms

On the heels of a summer outing which brought the band to over 100 cities in 40 states, the Gin Blossoms continue touring this fall. Fans can expect to hear songs from the group’s most recent album, Major Lodge Victory (Hybrid Recordings, August 2006), a preview of brand new songs and band favorites.

Major Lodge Victory is the band’s first new album in 10 years and features the tracks, “Learning the Hard Way,” and “Long Time Gone.” Billboard reported, “Learning the Hard Way is an effortless triumph of melodic perfection, organic production and collaboration that sounds familial in its ease.” About the album, USA Today raved “If you miss the sweet, simple pleasures of early-'90s guitar-pop the non-grungy variety, this collection of honeyed rockers from the reunited Blossoms is just the ticket to ride.”

The twelve songs on Major Lodge Victory deliver that same signature blend of melody, mystery and poignancy that Gin Blossoms fans have come to love -- from the band’s breakthrough album, New Miserable Experience through to its powerful followup Congratulations…I’m Sorry and such enduring and memorable songs as “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” “Follow You Down” and “Til I Hear It From You.” Since Robin Wilson, guitarists Jesse Valenzuela and Scott Johnson and bassist Bill Leen reunited as the Gin Blossoms in 2002, the idea of recording new songs was something the group thought about but didn’t want to force. “I wanted it to happen organically,” Valenzuela says. “And it did.”

Successful tour dates demonstrated that the many fans who cherished New Miserable Experience (which has sold more than four million copies in the U.S.) and Congratulations…I’m Sorry (which has sold more than a million) were still eager to hear more from the band. So were their younger brothers and sisters. “I didn’t even know if we could get back together,” Leen says. “I didn’t know we’d have a fan base. I think it helped that our songs never left the radio.”

Truly, on the radio it was as if the Gin Blossoms had never left, even as all the band’s members moved on to other projects. And getting back together proved satisfying. “A lot of fans came up to us and said, ‘I loved you guys for so long, and I was so bummed when you broke up and I never got to hear you play. I’m so glad you’re back,’” Johnson says. “That was gratifying. Now I respond by saying, ‘You’re going to hear us a lot more!”

To record Major Lodge Victory, the band members began working in their native state of Arizona, but ended up returning to Ardent Studios in Memphis, where they had made their previous two albums. “It felt like we were going home,” Wilson says. Drummer Scott Kusmirek, who had played with the band for a time after it reunited, joined the group in the studio. The irresistibly catchy “Learning the Hard Way,” which Valenzuela wrote is “a classic Gin Blossoms song,” Wilson says, evoking the band’s Tempe, Arizona club roots.

Valenzuela also wrote the soaring ballad “Someday Soon.” Wilson brought in the energetic rocker “Come On Hard,” while the two men collaborated on “The End of the World,” with its lush choruses and Beatles-style harmonies.

The fact is that very little on Major Lodge Victory will surprise fans, except in the way that great pop music always surprises listeners – by taking familiar elements and making them sound thrillingly new. “I felt it was important to stick to what we do best,” says Johnson. “We’ve changed, obviously. We’re a bit older. In the past, we were young and naïve, and, instead of dealing with our problems, we made the classic stupid move and broke up.

“Now we don’t take it for granted,” he continues. “I’m very proud of the Gin Blossoms and our sound and our style of rock & roll. I’m excited about bringing that to the world again.”

The Gin Blossoms are: Robin Wilson (vocals), Jesse Valenzuela (guitar), Scott Johnson (guitar) and Bill Leen (bass). Drummer Scott Kusmirek is currently touring with the group.

JUST THE ALBUM FACTS:
The Gin Blossoms have achieved widespread recognition including a Grammy nomination and chart busting album sales.. In addition to the multi-platinum New Miserable Experience (A&M, 1992) which spanned the hits “Hey Jealousy,” “Found Out About You,” “Until I Fall Away,” and “Allison Road,” the Gin Blossoms also reached platinum with Congratulations I’m Sorry (A&M, 1996) and hit songs “As Long As It Matters,” and “Follow You Down.” The group had a string of successful soundtrack songs including “Idiot Summer” from Wayne’s World 2 (Reprise, 1993) , “Til’ I Hear It From You” on Empire Records (A&M, 1995) and “Follow You Down” on How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (Virgin, 2003). In 2003, A&M released the 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection – The Best of the Gin Blossoms. In 2004, 20th Century Masters released Gin Blossoms –The DVD Collection. In August 2006, Hybrid Recordings released Major Lodge Victory.

Vicki Lawrence & Mama
February 15 - 17 •7:30pm

Multi-talented Vicki Lawrence was born in Inglewood, California where she excelled in dancing and singing, was a cheerleader and was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by her graduating class.

From 1965 to 1967 Vicki sang with the Young Americans musical group and also appeared in the feature film “The Young Americans” which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary.

During her senior year of high school, Vicki sent Carol Burnett a letter which included a local newspaper article mentioning their resemblance. Vicki invited Ms. Burnett to the local fire department’s “Miss Fireball Contest” in which she was performing. Ms. Burnett, looking for an actress to play her kid sister on her new variety series, contacted Vicki and made arrangements to come to the event. The rest is television history. “The Carol Burnett Show” premiered in the fall of 1967; the same year Vicki entered UCLA to study Theater Arts. She spent eleven years with Carol, earning one Emmy Award and five Emmy nominations. In 1995 Simon and Schuster published her story. Her autobiography is entitled, “Vicki!: The True Life Adventures of Miss Fireball.”

In 1968, Vicki went to Viet Nam to visit the U.S. troops with Johnny Grant. Several years later, in 1973, Vicki received a gold record as a recording artist for her international hit single, “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.”

After the Burnett show ended, Vicki went on to star in her own TV series, “Mama’s Family” with Ken Berry, Dorothy Lyman, Beverly Archer, and Allan Kayser. The last original episode was made in January of 1990, completing five years of first-run syndication. The show still can be seen daily throughout most of the country.

Vicki was the honorary head of the D.A.R.E. program in Long Beach, California for two years while her kids were still young and in school. Around that time she and her husband also became members of the Long Beach Police Officer’s Association that raises money to protect the widows and families of slain police officers. Her efforts to protect women’s rights were recognized in 1988 when Vicki was the first woman to be honored as “Person of the Year” by the Coalition of Labor Union Women. Shortly thereafter, Vicki became one of the few successful, female game show hosts when she took on the daytime network-version of “Win, Lose or Draw.”

Vicki further perfected her hosting skills on her own daytime talk show, appropriately called “Vicki!,” from 1992 to 1994. She received critical acclaim when she was the only talk show host since Oprah to be nominated for a Daytime Emmy in her freshman year. In the fall of 1997, she briefly returned to daytime talk as the host of “Fox After Breakfast” from New York City. On stage Vicki has appeared in numerous productions, including “Carousel,” “Send Me No Flowers,” “No, No, Nanette,” “My Fat Friend,” “Chapter Two,” “Twigs,” “Hello Dolly,” “Special Occasions,” “I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It ON The Road,” “Annie Get Your Gun” and live from the Grand Ole Opry, “Nunsense 3: The Jamboree” which aired on TNN. Most recently she appeared in the “Vagina Monologues.”

Vicki also travels all over the country speaking to women’s organizations about her life and career, women’s health, and being a woman in a man’s world. All the while she approaches everything with her characteristic sense of humor, reminding us all that “Life is much too serious to be taken seriously!” She also can be seen across the country in her stage production: “Vicki Lawrence and Mama, A Two Woman Show.”

Recently Vicki was invited to join The Board of Trustees for Miller Children’s Hospital at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. One of only eight children’s hospitals in the state, Miller Children’s Hospital was dedicated in 1970 as a community, non-profit hospital and now services patients within a 100-mile radius in LA and Orange counties. Vicki also hosts the annual WALK FOR THE CURE in her hometown where all the proceeds go to breast and ovarian cancer research at Long Beach Memorial Center.

In 1974 Vicki married the head of CBS make-up, Al Schultz, who is both her best friend and professional partner. Al and Vicki have two children, Courtney and Garrett. They live at the beach with their two dogs, Hannah, a black Labrador Retriever and Watson, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. They adopted a Yorkie Mix named Rosie when Vicki was hosting the Humane Society Telethon in Michigan. In their spare time Al and Vicki enjoy yacht racing. They own a 70-foot sloop named, fittingly, “Vicki.”

Danielle Peck
February 22 & 23 •7:30pm
$30/$25/$20
Get Tickets Now

There is an undeniable division in Danielle Peck’s voice. A bluesy pull, a reluctant smokiness that, when it breaks, yields soaring, ringing, soul-stirring power and clarity. That tantalizing slow-pour tension is a fitting reflection of the artist herself. Is she an exuberant young country singer or an experienced and purposed entertainer? Is she the self-described “plain Jane girl next door” or a statuesque brunette bombshell? Is she a former waitress fighting for her big break or a prolific songwriter who contributed eight of 11 songs to her upcoming album? Danielle Peck is all that and much more.

That self-titled debut release, preceded by the chart-rocketing first single "I Don't," reveals all the complexities associated with being a young woman making her way in a new millennium. As a songwriter, she's grounded enough to write a glowing affirmation like "Isn't That Everything," and honest enough to acknowledge the emotional despair of a breakup in "Fallin' Apart." As a vocalist, she offers shades of her influences, sounding by turns as rooted in country as Reba McEntire or as slyly sexy as Shania Twain and Faith Hill. The sum of those seemingly divergent parts is, ultimately, a message, sound and style unique to Danielle Peck.

Born in Jacksonville, NC, the daughter of a U.S. Marine, Danielle grew up in Coshocton, OH, where the family had strong musical roots. Her mother’s side of the family traveled and sang in churches. Her father’s parents and grandparents were steeped in country music, playing dances in the area. Danielle could sing before she could talk and by the time she was three she would sit on a counter banging on pots and pans as her extended family played country music. The first song she learned to sing was Johnny Cash’s "Folsom Prison Blues,” a song that has been part of her live show to this day.

She wrote her first song before she was 10 and made cassette labels for her imaginary Danielle Peck records, complete with song titles and cover art. She sang in church both as a soloist and in the choir. At age 16, she joined a local band, the Neon Moon Band, and played bars in her native Coshocton, Ohio area.

"I wasn’t supposed to be in there (bars) because I was underage," she says, "so I had to dress older, act older, sneak in through the back door, do my show, and then slip out the back again before anyone could figure out I was underage! I never thought twice about it because singing was all I’d ever thought about doing from the time I was a little girl – I felt like I was doing what I was supposed to… and of course my dad was always close by just in case…"

"I was the girl singer," she says. "I would sing Reba and Trisha and a lot of Patsy Cline. We played weekends and hit the local summer fairs. While my friends were into sports – I was consumed with music." At 18, her dad bought her a sound & light system that the family jokingly referred to as her ‘college tuition’. When she graduated from high school, she hit the road leading her own band adding regional fairs and festivals to the schedule.

After several years on the bar and festival circuit Danielle made the decision to chase the dream and make the jump to Nashville. She quickly took a Nashville job waiting tables and spent the rest of her time working on her songwriting. "I'd wake up at 8 in the morning, go and write songs until 2 in the afternoon, change clothes, work the restaurant until 2 or 3 in the morning, get up early the next morning and do it again," she says. "I became a Starbucks addict but I was having the time of my life! I was in Nashville, meeting people, starting to write with some great writers, I was loving every minute of it."

Soon after her Nashville arrival she met publisher Clay Myers who recognized her talent and helped secure a songwriting deal with Barbara Orbison’s Still Working Music. She soon began writing with staff writers Clay Mills and Tommy Lee James, as well as other established hit writers like Blair Daly and Taylor Rhodes. Those writing sessions would ultimately form the basis for her debut album.

That release had to wait, however. Signed to a recording contract with DreamWorks Records by executive Scott Borchetta, Danielle's album was a casualty of that company's merger with Universal. Borchetta, however, wouldn't let his belief in her music die and when he later left Universal to form his own Big Machine Records, Danielle was one of his first signings.

The single release "I Don't" finally introduced country audiences to Danielle, and the response has already been overwhelming. Already a hit and still climbing, the song also draws huge response at her live shows opening for, among others, Toby Keith. Fans are drawn to the emotional honesty of an artist who so readily reveals all facets of her personality.

Beyond the single, Danielle explores the difficulties of love on "Fallin' Apart," "Sucks To Be You" and "Only The Lonely Talkin'." She smolders with slow burn passion on "Kiss You On The Mouth" and "Thirsty Again." And the fun side peaks through on "Findin' A Good Man" and "Honky-Tonk Time." In every case, the emotions ring true.

"Everything comes down to being real," she says. "Every song I do reflects something I’ve been through or something I’ve felt. My songs are my journals. Whatever I feel at the moment, whatever emotion I’m going through, is what I write about. When it's time to sing those song, whether it's on stage or in the studio, those feelings are right there."

And so the many facets of Danielle Peck -- a modern country girl, vulnerable and confident -- shine through in a way that's already capturing the ears and hearts of country fans nationwide.

DANIELLE PECK FACTS

• Danielle is one of only a handful of new female country artists, including Carrie Underwood and Gretchen Wilson, in the last three years to have her single enter the Top 15. “Findin’ a Good Man” reached #11 on the Mediabase chart that appears weekly in USA Today. • Danielle’s powerful debut single, “I Don’t,” was written by the Coshocton, Ohio-raised singer and songwriter. It was the only debut song by a new female country artist to crack the Top 25 in the past year.

• Danielle wrote her first song at the age of 10 when she also designed cover art for her imaginary Danielle Peck record label. She joined a local band, Neon Moon, at 16 and continued to dream of a recording career.

Freddie Aguilar is a Pinoy rock musician from the Philippines. He is best known for the hit "Bayan Ko", which became anthem for the opposition to the Marcos regime during the 1986 rebellion. One of his hits "Anak" (Filipino word for child), became a worldwide hit and was translated into at least seven languages. Ferdinand Pascual Aguilar, a native of Isabela, was born in February 5, 1953. He studied Electrical Engineering at De Guzman Institute of Technology but did not finish the course. In 1973, he married Josephine Quiepo. One of their children, Maegan Aguilar, also became a singer.

When he entered the Metro Manila Popular Music Festival in 1978, Freddy Aguilar was almost completely unknown; within weeks he was possibly the best-known musician in Manila, and he has since consolidated that position to become the best known Filipino musician in the world. The song that took him to such great heights, heard for the first time at the 1978 competition, was "Anak," a folk-rock ballad sung in the local tagalog language. It has since spawned 54 covers in 14 other languages. He subsequently enjoyed great hits with such singles as "Magdalena" and "Bayan Ko." Prior to the release of "Anak," Aguilar cut his teeth peforming cover songs and original material for U.S. military personnel stationed on the Islands. Never one to shy away from politics, he wrote several anti-Marcos songs, including "Katarungang" and his "Bayan Ko" became the theme song for Cory Aquino's anti-Marcos election campaign in 1986. ~ Leon Jackson, All Music Guide

George Grove:
George Grove was born in Hickory, North Carolina on Oct. 9, 1947. He attended Wake Forest University where he majored in music. While at Wake Forest, he spent several summers entertaining U.S. Military personnel In Alaska and Europe. After graduating in 1969, he played trumpet and piano in the Army Band for two years, and spent time in Nashville working as a studio musician. In 1976, Bob Shane invited him to join The Kingston Trio.

In his time away from touring with the group, George arranges and scores orchestral music, produces albums for other artists, and does session work as a musician and vocalist.. George lives in Las Vegas.

Bill Zorn:
Bill Zorn has won national awards in television as a teenage variety show host, toured the world with three of the country’s top folk groups and produced albums in England and America.

He has also acted in British dramas and comedies, provided voiceovers for documentaries and cartoons, and published dozens of his own songs.

After four years as leader of The New Christy Minstrels and three years in The Kingston Trio, Bill moved to England in 1977. In his 20 years there he had a hit record, a successful folk band and more. He came back in 1997 to help revive the Limeliters, and after seven years with them he is enjoying his current adventure-once again touring with The Kingston Trio.

Rick Dougherty:
Rick Dougherty has over 30 years of experience as a guitarist, songwriter, performer, arranger and director but he is best known for his soaring tenor voice. He began playing guitar in college with a particular interest in finger-styles, and within a year he was appearing in local coffeehouses in Pasadena.

Besides possessing a beautiful voice, Rick is a seasoned entertainer. He plays the banjo, guitar, bass and piano superbly; he is also a songwriter and arranger, and possesses a flair for comedy which fits in perfectly with that facet of The Kingston Trio’s appeal.
