SOWA VEGAS BOUND AFTER WINNING MEADOWLANDS TOURNAMENT

John Sowa of Jersey City, N.J., is presented with a commemorative $14,000 check for winning the DRF/NTRA Qualifier handicapping tournament at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

Sowa celebrated his victory in the Sept. 29 tournament with dinner at the races and a guest appearance on the Meadowlands’ in-house television show on Friday night.

Sowa churned his $200 tournament bankroll into $2302, netting him the grand prize check and a trip to the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas for the 2008 DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship in January. Tournament runner-up Jack Kurz of Whippany, N.J., also qualified for the Vegas event.

The tournament cost $400 to enter, $200 of which went into a prize pool and the other $200 served as the player’s bankroll for the contest. The tournament required players to bet a total of 10 races: four Meadowlands live races and a choice of six additional races from Santa Anita, the Meadowlands or Mountaineer Park. Contest wagers had to meet a $20 minimum, $100 maximum per race; be win, place or combination and on one horse per race.

This was the first victory for Sowa, who frequently plays in tournaments at the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park. Sowa is a retired electrical engineer who now focuses on his two passions: handicapping and fishing. A lifelong resident of Jersey City, Sowa has been a handicapper for over 50 years. He first began going to the races at Roosevelt and Yonkers in New York.
