SPOILED BUT FAST

Chief What It Is Tackles Airline Stakes

(Bossier City, LA) – Lori Hendrickson’s parents bred Chief What It Is, knowing from the start the horse could run. On Saturday in the featured Airline Stakes at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs, Chief What It Is will face five others as the likely favorite.

“He’s a spoiled horse,” said Hendrickson of Chief What It Is. “He was born spoiled. He wants to try to do his own thing but I’ve got good riders on him that make him behave. He’s a feel good, life is happy kind of horse. He’s an annoying horse but everybody loves him.”

Spoiled but fast. Through eight career starts the son of Crafty Prospector has won three races, finished second twice and netted more than $85,000.

After being soundly defeated at Churchill Downs in the Matt Winn Stakes last month, Chief What It Is will attempt to rebound in the six furlong Airline. Hendrickson is timid in admitting her horse should win but she also realizes his trip in the Matt Winn cost him the race.

“I think there’s always that feeling inside you don’t know until the next race is over,” said Hendrickson. “He broke bad - terribly - he broke in the air. By the quarter pole he was up with the leaders, so you can imagine how fast he went. He came out of that race great.”

When Chief What It Is broke slow, his preferred scenario was immediately compromised.

“He’s very one dimensional,” said Hendrickson. “I feel like he’s going to go. I’m going to let the horse tell the rider what to do.”

In addition to Chief What It Is, there is plenty of speed in the Airline Stakes. Here Tiger for Steve Asmussen and Future Vision both prefer to go early. Premier Dance, who won last year’s Minstrel Stakes, figures to rally from off the pace.

Muni High Yield, for trainer Cody Autrey, is looking for his third win in a row. It will be the third start since January for his 3-year-old gelding. Doc O Dynamite, who hasn’t won since switching to the barn of W T Howard, rounds out the field.

The field for the Airline: Doc O Dynamite (C Meche, 10-1), Premier Dance (J Riquelme, 4-1), Chief What It Is (J Riquelme, 3-2), Here Tiger (L Meche, 9-2), Muni High Yield (D Meche, 2-1), Future Vision (J Burningham, 15-1).
