Spotlight is on casino bidders ANOTHER row has broken out over the super casino bid by the owners of London's Millennium Dome. It has been claimed the Dome team has been given an easy ride in written questions from the Casino Advisory Panel compared to other bidders including Blackpool. When quizzed on the type of area, Blackpool Council were asked whether having a lower proportion of ethnic minority residents than other towns in the UK would put them at a disadvantage and were pushed on the validity of claims that decline in the resort continued to accelerate. The Dome bid team were asked about the certainty of a Tutankhamen exhibition as part of a theatre or hotel in the complex. On the issue of regional context Blackpool's bid team was quizzed as to why they had not put in a bid for a large or small casino as a back-up. London's team were quizzed on the possible links to the 2012 Olympics and flights into nearby London City airport. Conservative MP David Davies said the disparity between the questions was more evidence to suggest a deal had already been done to hand the casino to London. Meanwhile, the second of the public hearings to scrutinise the merits of venues competing to host the first super casino in the UK, is taking place today in Cardiff. There will be further hearings in Glasgow, Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, Blackpool. Under the terms of The Gambling Act 2005, three types of casino will be permitted to operate in Britain. One regional or super casino will be permitted, along with eight large and eight small casinos. The main variation between the three types is the size of the customer area allowed, the number of slot machines and size of the jackpot. The super casino can have up to 1,250 unlimited jackpot machines and will have a minimum total customer area of 5,000 square metres.
