St. Kitts will host the 17th edition of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Volleyball Championships from 20th-23rd September at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort Recreation Centre, commonly known as “the Dome.”
The tournament is part of the calendar of activities marking the 24th anniversary of Independence for St. Kitts and Nevis. The event also highlights the genuine interests the St. Kitts Amateur Volleyball Association (SKAVA) has in expanding the horizons of sports tourism in the Federation.
Seven teams are confirmed for the four day tournament- St. Lucia, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, French St. Martin, Dutch St. Maarten, Montserrat and host country, St. Kitts and Nevis. The tournament was last held in St. Maarten, in 2005, where St. Kitts and Nevis emerged victorious and they are hoping to repeat the feat at the upcoming tournament.
The national team has been having some very encouraging practices at the Marriott Dome and players are confident that they will able to stand head and shoulders above the other teams once play starts. The present training squad includes James Matthew, Lancret Davis, Warren “Bob” Nicholas, Steadroy “Star” Collins, St. Clair “Penny” Hodge, Campbell Douglas, Kemoroy Percival, Junior Seabrookes, Shawn Seabrookes and Glenn Quinlan as Coach/player.
The team is also benefitting tremendously from the assistance of Hans Richards, who recently returned from Cuba, where he studied Physical Education, with emphasis on volleyball. According to St. Clair “Penny” Hodge, one of the premier attackers on the team, the level of confidence in the squad has increased tremendously over the last few training sessions and he anticipates that the team feed off the support of the anticipated large home crowds.
Team captain, Steadroy “Star” Collins, was also very confident ahead of the games. He, however, noted that his side would not be taking any team lightly, as all the visiting sides would be coming with the motive of spoiling the plans of the home side.
Collins noted that once the local side executes its strategies to the fullest they would be in an ideal position to take the championship.
The SKAVA wishes to express its profound gratitude to the St. Kitts Marriott Hotel and the Royal Casino for the use of “the Dome” and other tangibles, Cable and Wireless, TDC, the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and other stakeholders for the very healthy partnerships they have established with the SKAVA.
The opening ceremony will be at 5 in the afternoon, on September 20th and plans are the advanced stages to carry some of the games live on television. |
