TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The U.S. Attorney's office announced a corruption investigation in western Alabama on Friday morning.

State Rep. Bryant Melton was accused of public corruption and money laundering, two federal charges. Melton also faces a felony charge from the state.

U.S. Attorney Alice Martin announced the charges and said that, during a three-year period, Melton falsely directed $85,000 worth of grants for personal use.

Martin said Melton personally received $68,000 of money that was supposed to go to the Alabama Fire College to train firefighters that he allegedly used to pay gambling debts.

Martin said that Melton admitted guilt and agreed to pay back the $85,000. Once his guilty plea is accepted, the felony conviction will remove him from office.

Melton represented the 70th district, which includes Tuscaloosa.
