Status of gambling in state's four zones

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- The status of gambling in each of four "zones" designated by a new state law.

Northeast Zone

Counties: Wyandotte.

In an election June 26, 81 percent voted to permit a casino and 82 percent, for slot machines at The Woodlands dog and horse racing park in Kansas City.

Developers have until Dec. 31 to submit casino proposals to the Kansas Lottery Commission.

Southeast Zone

Counties: Cherokee, Crawford.

In an April 3, 2005, election in Crawford County, 61 percent voted to permit a casino and 62 percent to allow slots at the now-closed Camptown Greyhound Park north of Frontenac.

On June 5, voters in Cherokee County voted to authorize a casino. The two counties will compete for a single resort complex.

The deadline for casino applications is Dec. 6.

South-central Zone

Counties: Sedgwick, Sumner.

Sumner County had an election to authorize a casino on Dec. 20, 2005, and 63 percent voted "yes."

On Aug. 7, Sedgwick County rejected both a casino and slot machines at Wichita Greyhound Park.

The deadline for Sumner County casino applications is Nov. 13.

Southwest Zone

Counties: Ford.

On June 26, 64 percent said "yes" to authorizing a casino. The deadline for applications is Dec. 26.
