Supervisor Calls Secret Choctaw Casino Meeting "Insulting"

Sep 6, 2007 08:48 PM EDT

A secret meeting between the new Choctaw Indian Chief and some Jackson County leaders has county supervisor Frank Leach fuming.

Leach says it was insulting to find out Chief Beasley Denson came to the coast last week to meet with the mayors of Ocean Springs, Moss Point and some area business leaders. They talked about a proposed Choctaw casino in Jackson County. But the county supervisors were not invited to that meeting, even though the Choctaw's Highway 57 land is in the county.

Leach asked the new chief for a meeting months ago, but that has never happened. "From the Indian Tribes, honor is a great word," District 4 Supervisor Frank Leach said. "This has been an issue of dishonoring or presenting and issue where the Chief's honor is in question, as he had a representative contact me, make representation that did not come to fruition. And then to have some clandestine meeting behind the backs of the people who are ultimately responsible for working with the Department of the Interior, and expressing opinion pro or either con with that federal agency."

In November, Jackson County residents will vote on whether they favor an Indian casino in the county.

Leach says supervisors would still like a sit-down with Denson, but he's unsure if it will happen before the election.
