Swains News Wins Sunday at Fair Grounds
NEW ORLEANS, La. (March 16, 2008) --
On Target Racing Stable’s Swains News, under a patient ride by jockey Corey Lanerie, took command entering the stretch and withstood rivals late to win the $40,000 allowance feature Sunday at Fair Grounds.
Trained by Patrick Mouton, who was saddling his third winner of the afternoon, Swains News increased his career earnings to $64,490 with his second victory in five lifetime starts and toured the about 1 1/16-mile distance over the firm Stall-Wilson turf course in 1:44.86.
Storm on the Track rallied late to gain the place, 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner and a neck in front of Warn, who also launched a mild late bid.
Swains News paid $25.60, $13.20 and $6.80, while Storm on the Track returned $14.60 and $9.20 and Warn returned $4.
Onthedeanslist, who made the pace with fractions of :24.13 and :48.45 while pressed by the winner, tired from the effort and finished 11th.
The final week of Fair Grounds’ 136th season begins Thursday. First post for Thursday’s 10-race program is at 12:35 p.m.
