The Better Business Bureau serving western Virginia warns consumers not to fall for the numerous winning sweepstakes checks being sent from bogus foreign lotteries. Mailings being received are from The North American Lottery and Sweepstakes Board, G&F's Cash Lottery, OZ Lottery, and the International Mega Lotto drawings. Consumers are sent bogus checks for amounts ranging from $2,100 to $4,425.88. The mailings state that the checks are to cover the insurance and processing fees for the lottery. The scam operators benefit when the consumer deposits the bogus check and then sends the fee, normally via Western Union, to pay the "insurance" money. When the checks bounce, the consumer is responsible for repaying the bank for the amount of the check.
