The Duval County Health Department is investigating possible exposure to tuberculosis at the SunCruz Casinos ship in Mayport.
The investigation was initiated after the hospitalization of a former employee of the company who worked on the ship, Larry Bassani, spokesman with Dania Beach-based SunCruz Casinos, said Thursday. The former employee, Bassani said, left the company "several months" ago. Tests on the former employee's family members came back negative.
About 128 employees on the cruise ship were tested as a precaution, health department spokesman Charles Griggs said. Results of the tests will become available starting today.
Tuberculosis is a curable disease, spread through the air, the department said. A positive test usually means that the person has been exposed to the tuberculosis bacteria. It does not necessarily mean the person has active tuberculosis.
The SunCruz ship continues to operate and customers have not been tested, Bassani said.
"The health department," he said, "gave us no indication of any additional steps necessary beyond testing the employees."
Bassani said he does not expect the investigation, which he described as "routine," to affect business.
