MOUNT PLEASANT -- Saginaw-based Teamsters Local 486 has opened an office just east of here.
The union has tried to organize workers at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort for the past several months but has met resistance from administrators, said Local 486 business agent Ed Morin.
He said the office, on Commercial Drive in the industrial park north of M-20 across from the casino, will help union officials improve communication with employees.
The Teamsters has filed unfair labor practice charges against the casino. Union officials claim Soaring Eagle has continuously led employees to believe that they have no rights to organize and form a union.
The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, owner of the casino, says it is not subject to National Labor Relations Board rules because it is a sovereign nation.
The case could go before an administrative law judge this year, Morin said.
