The Beau lends six critters a helping hand

Groomed, dressed and looking for a home, six dogs took to the runway Friday night at the Humane Societies' Club Tiki Goes to the Dogs (and Cats) charity event at Beau Rivage.

"We get great animals into the shelter and sometimes they are a little rough when we get them, but with a little love and tender care they can be beautiful," said Tara High, executive director of the Humane Society of South Mississippi.

The dogs in the fashion show were given makeovers and foster homes. The animals stayed in foster homes for about two months before the event to enhance behavior and social skills.

"She was all matted and stinky when we got her," said Angie Juzang, who fostered May, a Lhasa Apso. "After a month, she became part of our family."

Juzang agreed to foster a dog because her son wanted one, and she needed to see if he could handle the responsibility.

"It's a good way to determine if a dog will fit into your lifestyle, and to give a dog a loving home even if for a short time," Juzang said.

She enjoyed having May in her home, and she plans to adopt a bigger dog for her son.

Attendees bid on the ability to adopt the pooches, as well as donated items during a silent and a live auction.

Proceeds from the $60 tickets and the auctions went to the Humane Societies' capital campaign. The organization is raising money to build a training center and a public dog park.

This is the second event put on by the Beau for the Humane Society. Music, dancers and food were provided by the casino in their pool area.

"Sometimes an organization needs a little help, and the Beau Rivage not only helps us financially, but it enhances our outreach to the community," said High.
