Inside, it looks nothing like a tent.
The Meadows Race Track & Casino opened for the first of two test runs today with 4,000 guests of the Greater Washington County Food Bank.
At a cost of $52 million, the casino sits inside two tents linked together. The plasma TVs, banks of brand-new slot machines and colorful lighted signs make it seem permanent.
"It's a temporary facility, so it doesn't have the grandeur," said Michael Cruz, senior manager of the state Gaming Control Board's laboratory. "However, when you set foot in here, it doesn't look like a tent. You walk inside and it looks like a casino. They did a good job of that."

The main room of the casino holds 1,000 slot machines. A secondary room holds 700 slot machines. The casino has a 360-seat all-you-can-eat buffet and a sports bar with 30 bar-top video poker games. The facility employs 450 people.
The temporary casino opens to the public at 8:30 a.m. Monday, assuming to test runs for invited guests go smoothly.
A second test run benefiting The Washington Hospital is scheduled for Sunday.
Reporters got a sneak peak at the new casino this afternoon before it welcomed the food bank.
"Our temporary rivals all the casinos open today," said Bill Paulos, one of the principal owners of Cannery Casino Resorts of Las Vegas, which owns the Meadows. |
