The Plainfield Pets Program
Plainfield Pets, one of the first on-track greyhound adoption programs in the country to be designed after the greyhound racing industry’s Model Adoption Program, is in its eighth year of operation at Plainfield Greyhound Park.
The Plainfield Pets Program is designed to facilitate the placement of retired racing greyhounds in loving homes through an on-site facility at Plainfield Greyhound Park. Since the program began in 1992, over 2,000 greyhounds have been matched with adoptive families or affiliate agencies.
Plainfield Pets is entirely administered by track personnel and is financed by Plainfield Greyhound Park, the independent kennels that race at Plainfield, and through public donations. Since its’ inception, Plainfield Greyhound Park and its kennels have contributed over $ 500,000 in support of greyhound adoption.
Plainfield Chief Operations Officer, Karen Keelan, calls the program a natural for Plainfield, which in the mid 1980’s became an industry pioneer in greyhound adoption. "For the last decade we have prided ourselves at Plainfield in our role as an industry trendsetter in greyhound adoption. Through Plainfield Pets, we have taken on even greater responsibility in finding homes for retired racers".
The Plainfield Pets Program is tailored after the Model Adoption Program endorsed by the American Greyhound Track Operators Association. The industry supports the establishment of on-track programs whereby tracks take on more responsible and involved roles in finding homes for retired racers.
Families or individuals interested in adopting a greyhound can call the track to receive an information packet and application. Plainfield Greyhound Park administers the program through an adoption representative who coordinates the individual adoptions, reviews the applications, sets up appointments and works very closely with the individual or family making sure the pertinent information is available to make the transition from the kennels to the homes run smoothly.
The Program is complimented and bolstered by affiliate relationships with several independent adoption groups in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
