With the spring thoroughbred meet over, we offer the "Westies" to honor the special "achievements" during the season at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie.
The Dick Clark Old-As-You-Feel Award
Proven Cure for winning at age 12 the Littlebitlively Stakes. Proven Cure is the oldest stakes winner racing in North America and one of only five horses in recent history to win a stakes race at such an advanced age.
The Susan Lucci Persevering-Without- Embarrassment Award
Kiri Camp for finishing second five times during the season and third once in six starts. He has seven runner-up finishes at Lone Star in his career, without a victory.
The Invisible Man Award
Trainer Scott Blasi for winning a dozen races the final two weeks of the season while remaining, yes, invisible. Blasi assumed training responsibilities for leading trainer Steve Asmussen, who was inactive because of a suspension.
The Ryan Leaf Award for the season's most overrated horse
New Export for finishing second as the 1-2 favorite in the Dallas Turf Cup, a neck behind Trial By Jury.
The John Deere Lawnmower-On-The-Grass Award
Candy Ball for winning three races on the Lone Star turf course, including the Fresa Stakes.
The Erik the Red Plunder-and-Raiding Award (a tie)
Stream Cat for arriving at Lone Star Park from Kentucky on the morning of May 29, winning the USA Stakes that afternoon and then leaving the next morning; and Sweet Talker for winning more championships than races during the season. The winner of the WinStar Distaff in her only local start, she was named champion older filly and champion turf horse.
The Charlie Sheen Bad Actor Award
Sweepingly for acting badly in the starting gate July 7 and again on closing day. He was attempting to jump into an adjacent stall of the gate when the race began July 7. And in Sunday's fourth race, he again reared before the start and as a result got himself left behind. He finished third Sunday; nevertheless, he won four races this season.
The Philosopher's Award
Trainer John Locke for winning three stakes this season, including Sunday's Middleground with Dream Of Angels.
