Scottsdale police are investigating a purse-snatching incident reported by a woman who said she had just won $40,000 from Casino Arizona.
The 60-year-old woman, whose name was not released, told police that a man grabbed her purse in the parking lot of the Albertsons at 2785 N. Scottsdale Road about 7 p.m. Tuesday shortly after she left the casino. She wasn’t injured.
The robber is described as a 5-foot-8 Hispanic about 28 to 35 years old, weighing 170 pounds with short black hair.
He was driving a newer-model gold pickup truck with an extended cab and dark-tinted windows. She said she last saw the truck traveling north on North Scottsdale Road.
The woman told police she had just stopped for groceries, but hadn’t entered the store.
No composite sketch has been completed because other identification methods are being utilized, said Scottsdale detective Sam Bailey.
Bailey said he wasn’t sure whether the woman had cash or a check from the winnings in her purse.
Ramone Martinez, Casino Arizona marketing manager, said patrons have the option of specifying cash or check for large winnings.
He said there were a number of people who won large amounts of money on Tuesday, but he wouldn’t confirm specific amounts.
Martinez also said that authorities are reviewing security cameras from the casino, and that the names of winners are confidential.
Casino Arizona pays out $5.9 million a day in winnings, Martinez said.
Mark Wilkins, director of the Albertsons store, wouldn’t comment on the incident
