Thompson Closes Out Season With Win 500

November 26, 2007 --
Terry Thompson, Hoosier Park’s all-time leading rider, added another milestone to his already impressive resume at the Anderson, Ind. track Saturday, Nov. 24. The final race on the final night of racing was recorded by Thompson aboard Hope Copy by only a head, but the win will be memorable.

Thompson, a native of Nebraska, earned his 500th career win at Hoosier Park in the event. He becomes the first jockey to ever surpass the milestone. He also holds the mark for most wins in one night (seven) ever recorded by a jockey and most wins in one meet (122), both set during the 2002 meet.

“I didn’t realize how close I was until yesterday when Tammy (Knox) told me I had 498,” said Thompson. “I thought I had a shot to get there but as the night progressed, I knew I was running out of opportunities.”

Thompson picked up his 499th win aboard Brean Can for owner Ron McKay and trainer Mike Nance in the evening’s seventh race. He teamed up with Nance and McKay again in the final race with Hope Copy for the riding double on closing night.

“He (Hope Copy) ran a great race,” said Thompson. “I knew he had a chance but it is horse racing so you can never be sure. This is exciting to be the first to ever win 500 races at Hoosier Park. I didn’t ride at Hoosier Park for a couple years so it allowed Rodney (Prescott) and everyone else to catch up to me.”

Thompson completed the 2007 meet at Hoosier Park with 53 wins and a third place finish in the standings. He earned leading jockey titles at the track in 2000 and 2001. Thompson also has numerous titles from Prairie Meadows in Iowa, now his home base.

“I am going to Turfway Park for the Holiday meet,” added Thompson. “Once that is over, I will go home for the holidays. I will start at the first of the year in Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark.”
