Tioga Downs to host stakes series
NICHOLS-- Tioga Downs will host the Tompkins-Geers Sire Stakes, a part of the Grand Circuit races on Sunday and Monday, featuring several of the top harness drivers in the nation.
The Grand Circuit is the oldest continuous harness racing event in the nation, tracing its origins to Cleveland, Ohio, and Buffalo in the 1870's. Two-year-old colts and fillies race in both pace and trot categories in the circuit.
"The Tompkins-Geers event at our track is the equivalent of the most exciting play-off games in professional sports," said Jason Settlemoir, vice-president of Racing Operations at the track.
Driving in the event's races will be nationally recognized drivers such as John Campbell, the youngest member of the sport's Hall of Fame, Brian Sears who holds the record for highest single season earnings, Catello Manzi who holds the record, 727, for lifetime wins and George Brennan a 1996 honoree of the U.S. Harness Writers Association's Rising Star Award
