Topaz Lodge-casino in south Douglas County closed by fire
TOPAZ LAKE, Nev. (AP) - The Topaz Lodge and Casino on the Nevada-California line in southern Douglas County will be closed for an unknown length of time following a fire Tuesday night.
The fire broke out in the attic area and is tentatively attributed to an electrical short.
Several fire departments responded and had the fire under control about one hour after it was first reported. There were no injuries.
Rob Cashell, who owns the lodge with his father, Reno Mayor Bob Cashell, said the important thing is the casino was evacuated safely. He says he is confident the casino and restaurants will not be closed long.
Rob Cashell says there is a lot of cleanup and mopup to do, and there is a lot of smoke and water damage that will have to be dealt with.
The majority of the fire damage was contained to the attic and the business offices in the new portion of the upstairs of the lodge above the casino floor.
The lodge has a staff of about 150 employees. During the cleanup, the general store, gas station and lodging accommodations will remain open with a special rate of $35 a night in the lodge while the casino and restaurants remain closed. |
