Trial of Sisters in Bingo Case Under Way

(LEXINGTON, Ky.) -- Assistant US Attorney Ken Taylor has told a US District Court jury in Lexington that two eastern Kentucky sisters have skimmed possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars from charity gaming proceeds. Rita Tipton and Gloria Williams are accused of skimming the money from From 1998 to 2002 at Jackpot Charity Bingo at Waco in Madison County.
Taylor said yesterday in a federal courtroom at Lexington that the two women failed to report the Bingo income to the Internal Revenue Service. The trial contiues today.
Tipton and Williams were each charged earlier this year with one count of conspiracy, three counts of tax evasion and three counts of mail fraud.
Cletis Adams and his wife, Brenda, who were charged with Tipton and Williams, pleaded guilty last week to one count of tax evasion and could serve up to five years for that crime. The Adamses are not scheduled to testify for the prosecution but might be called by the defense.
