The Tripura government has decided to ban online lottery in the state following a breach of contract by its marketing agent.
Finance Minister Badal Chowdhury said the decision was taken following the marketing agent's (Videocon International Ltd.) failure to remit sale proceeds.
A notification banning the lottery will be issued Monday.
'When Videocon International Ltd. defaulted in remittance of sale proceeds and was not paying the minimum assured revenue as per the agreement since December, the government issued a show cause notice followed by a discussion with the party concerned,' Chowdhury told reporters Sunday.
'Appropriate civil and criminal action will be initiated immediately against Videocon International Ltd. for its failure to comply with terms of agreement as well as in respect of 15 bounced cheques.'
Several cases, including one filed by the state government about the conduct of the online lottery were also pending before the courts here and in Maharashtra.
According to Chowdhury, the state government had introduced the lottery in February 2005 following the advice of the Planning Commission for generating revenue.
'Till date, the state government has earned Rs.60 million from the online lottery, which is also played in Maharashtra, Sikkim, Goa and West Bengal,' he said.
According to the five-year agreement, the marketing agent was supposed to pay the Tripura government Rs.40 million in the first year followed by Rs.50 million in the second and Rs.87.50 million in the third year.
In the fourth and fifth years, the amount would have been Rs.100 million and Rs.125 million respectively.
Alleging irregularities over the conduct of the lottery, opposition leader Ratan Lal Nath has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry.
