A gang of 17 armed men robbed the Tusk Umfolozi Casino in Empangeni of nearly R1-million on Saturday night, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
"The men were armed with rifles, possibly AK-47s, and pistols," Captain Tienkie van Vuuren said on Sunday.
Wearing balaclavas, the men entered the casino at 11.40pm and ordered patrons onto the floor. Some of the gangsters entered the vault and helped themselves to money.
"Two customers were also... robbed of a couple of a thousand of rand while they were lying on the floor," Van Vuuren said.
The men fled the casino in a white Ford or Mazda and a black BMW with Gauteng number plates. They also hijacked another car from a motorist not far from the casino. It was later found abandoned two kilometres away.
No one was injured.
Van Vuuren asked anyone able to assist the police with information about the robbery to call 035-788-9800 or 08600-10111. - Sapa |
