Vabaza to fight for IBF title at Nasrec by Ron Jackson


Gabula Vabaza will meet Steve Molitor of Canada in a battle of southpaws for the vacant IBF super bantamweight title at the Nasrec Indoor Arena in Johannesburg on September 1.
The belt became vacant when Israel Vasquez was stripped of the championship for failing to defend it against Molitor on December 3 last year, as they had agreed.

Vabaza, who has a record of 23-0-1 (15 stoppages), is a former South African flyweight and WBU super flyweight champion.

He can thank his promoter, Branco Milenkovic, for giving him the opportunity to challenge for one of the major belts. Milenkovic has been negotiating for the last three months to put this fight together.

Molitor, unbeaten after 22 bouts (8 stoppages), is not concerned about having to travel to South Africa. He has had two fights in England and three in the United States.

In September 2002, Molitor, now 26 and not known as a power puncher, outboxed the capable Nicky Booth in England to win the Commonwealth bantamweight title.

In January 2004, he returned to England to outpoint John Mackay.

Molitor’s management are so confident of victory that plans are being made by his promoter to present his first defence at the Niagra Falls View Casino Resort in Ontario
