Valley View Casino near Escondido has entered into an exclusive deal with AEG Live San Diego to book and produce pop concerts at a new 2,000-seat outdoor concert venue that is being built adjacent to the casino. The combination of the venue, which is scheduled to open next spring in Valley Center, and AEG's clout should intensify competition in the already heated San Diego County concert market.
“This is Valley View's first foray into concerts and we're very glad they chose us,” said Steve Redfearn, AEG Live San Diego's vice president.
“We anticipate doing at least 15, and as many as 20, concerts for the first season, which will begin in April and go into the early fall.”
AEG San Diego opened operations here in July as the ninth and newest division of AEG Live, the nation's second-largest concert promotion company. AEG is presenting most of the dates on English singer Annie Lennox's tour, which opened here last week at the Civic Theatre. Other upcoming AEG-produced shows here include Kelly Clarkson, Nov. 16 at the Civic Theatre, and Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie, Nov. 20 at the San Diego Sports Arena.
AEG owns the Staples Center and Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, as well as other major concert and sports venues here and abroad. The company this summer hired Redfearn and all but one of his eight-member team away from Viejas Entertainment, which booked concerts at Viejas Casino and at several regional venues, including the Embarcadero and Humphrey's Concerts by the Bay. |
